TWA Hotel and Museum at JFK Airport (New York, USA)
Location: Hotel and Museum in TWA Flight Center of the John F.Kennedy International Airport in NY.
It’s an honour to be a part of a great project by the legendary Eero Saarinen. Our involvement in the Hotel and Museum at the iconic TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York has been both challenging and immensely rewarding.
The centerpiece of our contribution to this historic site is the fabrication and installation of eight sets of sliding bronze doors, each with custom decorative screws. At first glance, the intricate design posed a significant challenge, but we thrive on such opportunities. Our team was dedicated to ensuring that the final product adhered precisely to the customer’s unique specifications, embodying the vision of Eero Saarinen.
This project required the use of over 100 bronze sheets, carefully selected and crafted through our specialized architectural metal fabrication process. Each door stands at an impressive 17 feet in height and 6 feet in width, with an approximate weight of 2000 pounds. These substantial dimensions required precise engineering and meticulous attention to detail to ensure both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The doors feature a bronze patina relieved finish, achieved through our custom metal fabrication techniques. This finish not only enhances the visual appeal of the doors but also ensures durability and longevity, maintaining the historical and luxurious feel of the TWA Flight Center. The patina finish provides a timeless look, blending seamlessly with the mid-century modern design elements of the building.
An exceptional aspect of this project is the incorporation of more than 13,000 custom-made decorative brass screws. These screws, crafted to exact specifications, add a distinctive touch to the bronze doors, highlighting our capability in producing intricate and bespoke metal works. The combination of bronze and brass in this architectural metal fabrication project demonstrates our versatility and expertise in handling various metals to achieve the desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.
The sliding mechanism of the doors was another critical aspect of the design, requiring precision and expertise to ensure smooth and reliable operation given the substantial weight and size of each door. Our custom metal fabrication process ensured that every component was engineered to perfection, providing both beauty and functionality.
In summary, our work on the Hotel and Museum at the TWA Flight Center is a testament to our commitment to excellence in metal fabrication. This project showcases our ability to undertake complex and large-scale architectural metal fabrication tasks, using bronze, brass, and stainless steel to create stunning and enduring metal works. We are proud to have contributed to preserving and enhancing the legacy of Eero Saarinen’s iconic design.
